How Can Fruit Help Me Lose Weight?
Numerous studies have confirmed what many may consider to be common sense. One study showed that “serum carotenoids (a biomarker for fruit and vegetable intake) correlated with improved weight and fat loss” (Whigham et al.). This goes to show that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption is an appropriate strategy for weight loss when not increasing overall daily caloric intake.
While fruit alone is obviously not going to cause you to lose weight, an article by Elise Mandl concludes that most fruits are high in nutrients and fiber “which can boost your fullness” (Mandl). She also lists several fruits and their benefits. Cherries specifically, she points out, are “low-GI, low-calorie, and rich in nutrients like vitamins C and A — which make them great for people trying to lose weight” (Mandl).
Another source points out that cherries specifically have several other benefits as well! For those with a sweet tooth, the natural sweetness provides a much healthier means of satisfying cravings than ice cream, cookies, candy, or other options. Cherries have less than 100 calories per cup and no fat (“Are cherries fattening or good for weight loss?”). But, they do provide several vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B5, magnesium, vitamin A, manganese, and several others (Kloss).
Overall, while it may be obvious to most people that fruit is a healthy snack option, it is not hard to see why it could be important in a weight loss diet. Helping people to feel more full with fewer calories and packing more vitamins and nutrients into every bite, fruits are an essential part of any healthy weight loss diet.
